Šárka is one of the few places in Prague where you can just come, start a fire and roast some sausages under the open sky. Or fancy a barbecue? Just bring your own grill and meat.

Fancy a barbecue party? The things that you need to throw one are typically a fireplace, a wooden picnic table with chairs and a bin. The great thing about Šárka is that it is one of the places where employees of Lesy hlavního města Prahy (an institution that takes care of wooded areas in Prague) regularly bring wood which can be used as fuel for grilling. What is more, if the weather is not exactly perfect you can throw a barbecue party in an arbour not far from here. You can bring your own grill or use the revolving firmly attached one that you will find there.

You don’t need to make any reservation or report in advance. Just make sure you don’t violate the rules which state that grilling here is only allowed from 8 in the morning till 11 in the evening.

Starting a fire. What conditions apply?

Only people over 18 years of age (or those who are accompanied by at least one person over 18 years of age) may start a fire here.

Grilling is only allowed using one’s own grill. It is prohibited by the existing rules to:

  • dispose of ash (even if it is seemingly cold) in the forest or areas close to the picnic area,
  • build a new fireplace,
  • break or cut live wood in the forest; you may, however, collect dry fallen branches around the place,
  • dispose of garbage or pollute the place,
  • use the picnic area at night,
  • produce excessive noise.

You must always fully extinguish the fire before you leave the picnic area. The municipal police and the forest guards carry out regular inspections, making sure the aforementioned rules are observed.

There are a few more places in Prague where you can start a fire. These are: Ďáblický háj, Hloubětín, Prokopské údolí-Klukovice, Řepský areál, Hostivař park and two more places in Kunratický les.

Picnic areas in Prague where you can’t start a fire

It is not allowed to start a fire in the historical parks in Prague due to special precautions taken. The good thing is that there are a few where you can come, spread your blanket, unpack your picnic basket and use your own grill. You have to bring your own fuel, though. There are three such places close to Prague 6, two in Obora Hvězda and one in Stromovka, and more can be found elsewhere in Prague – Petřín, Kinsky Garden, and Vítkov. Due to the increasing popularity of picnicking the number of park restaurants that offer their own picnic baskets for as little as a few hundred crowns has grown proportionately.
